Starkweather & Shepley was founded in 1879 when James Starkweather, a manufacturer, and George Shepley, an insurance man came together to create an insurance agency that changed the way people in Rhode Island would think about insurance.
In the early 1990’s, the Workers Compensation environment in Rhode Island was terrible. Most manufacturers were forced into the assigned risk pool because no insurance carriers would voluntarily write the required coverage.
Starkweather was at the forefront of the Self Insured Group (SIG) creation, specifically for the various manufacturing groups. SIMA (Self Insured Manufacturers Association), JIRMA (Jewelry Industry Risk Management Association), BIRMA (Business & Industry Risk Management Association), and RINHG (Rhode Island Nursing Home Group) all were created and/or serviced by Starkweather.
In fact, RINHG is still a growing, thriving self-insured program for the best nursing homes in RI. At the same time, we have significantly invested in our Group Captive initiative to support manufacturers looking for cost effective risk transferring tools, when applicable and appropriate.
Today, Starkweather & Shepley is still re-defining the definition of excellent customer service and what insureds should expect from their insurance broker. As one of the 100 largest U.S. brokers, we still manage the insurance needs of local individuals and companies.

Michael Prentiss is professional down to earth and is a natural bridge maker. What I like most about him is that he usually has all the answers and when he doesn’t he finds it out for you. Michael is an asset to my company and I am confident he is always giving 110%. He is professional, personable and very knowledgeable about the manufacturing industry. He helped our company reduce our Workers Compensation premium by over 20%. We highly recommend Michael.
